A mantra is a specific sequence of words that is sung either once or repeatedly. Tibetan monks do this when making Tibetan bracelets. By doing this with internal strength, vibrations are created that bring you into a deep, meditative state. This results in mantra vibrations that have powerful spiritual and healing properties. Additionally, it is also a great way to focus your mind. The word mantra is a combination from the ancient Sanskrit language where manasah (mind) and tra (liberation through mind control) are meant.

How to practice a mantra

If you’re starting for the first time, it’s advisable to build up slowly. Begin with five minutes for your first time, gradually increasing to ten minutes in your third week. After that, you can extend it to fifteen minutes three weeks later.

  1. Take a comfortable seated position, making sure you’re sitting upright.
  2. To relax, you can first take two minutes of calm breathing through your nose.
  3. Repeat your mantra for the duration of your practice, allowing yourself to focus solely on saying it and nothing else.
  4. Afterward, take another two minutes of calm breathing through your nose and let go of your thoughts.
  5. Let the moment settle in and reflect on the feeling it releases within you.

Lotus Sutra Mantra

This mantra is central in Nichiren Buddhism, which combines Buddhist teachings and wisdom from the Japanese teacher Nichiren Daishonin. Additionally, the mantra offers dedication to the Lotus Sutra, which teaches that everyone has the potential to attain Enlightenment.

Nam Myo Ho Renge Kyo Nam (I vow devotion) Myo (To the perfection that is miraculous after conception) Ho (The Dharma) Renge (Of the Lotus Flower) Kyo (Teaching – Sutra).
